CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor - Lot 66
CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor, and educator. One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and founder of the École normale de musique de Paris. Typewritten letter signed “Alf Cortot,” addressed to the Portuguese composer Francisco de Lacerda (1859–1934). Paris, April 16, 1931. 2 pages, in-8 format, on personal letterhead “alf. Cortot - 79, avenue Henri-Martin.” Autograph signature in black ink. A very interesting letter concerning the publication of Francisco de Lacerda’s *Trovas* and a plan to acquire documents from the library of the Italian composer Francesco Lamberti. Upon his return from a stay in Lisbon, Alfred Cortot extends his warmest thanks to his correspondent for the hospitality he received in Portugal: “Upon my return to Paris, I wish to assure you and your family once again of my deepest gratitude for all the expressions of affection you showed me during my all-too-brief stay in Lisbon. ” The pianist then discusses the steps taken to secure the publication of the *Trovas*—songs inspired by Portuguese folklore—with Mr. Cools, who had already been involved in this project prior to the death of the publisher Eschig. Cortot expresses particular enthusiasm for the musical value of these compositions and confirms his intention to have them published: “He assured me that he was still willing to have them published and promised, moreover, to contact you regarding this matter. ” He requested that the manuscripts be sent to him and expressed a desire to organize their premiere at the École normale de musique in Paris. The second part of this letter is of particular interest to bibliophiles. Cortot reflects on his visit to the Lamberti Library in Lisbon and on the planned negotiations with the heirs of its owner. He specifies that Mr. Legoux, of the music committee at the École Normale Library, is to contact the heirs and prepare an acquisition proposal. “Only after he has received a response from the current owners—and if that response does not encourage him to pursue the negotiations further—will I feel justified in informing your son of the various catalog entries I might be willing to acquire, as well as the terms of that acquisition. ” This correspondence thus attests to Alfred Cortot’s dual role as both a performer and advocate for the music of his time, as well as a bibliophile and passionate collector of rare musical documents. As the founder of the École normale de musique in 1919, Alfred Cortot built up a significant music library, bringing together rare editions, scores, and autograph manuscripts. His interest in the Lamberti Library perfectly illustrates this passion. A beautiful letter combining two particularly sought-after subjects: the history of Franco-Portuguese music and Alfred Cortot’s passion for musical bibliophilia. The document is preserved with its original folds, a few creases, and slight signs of handling. The autograph signature is clearly visible. In good overall condition.
