CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor - Lot 65
CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor, and educator; one of the greatest performers of the 20th century. Autograph note signed “A. Cortot” to a friend. Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine), July 12, 1944. 1 page, in-8 format, in black ink, on personal letterhead: “Alf. Cortot, 58, boulevard Maillot, Neuilly-s.-Seine.” A kind thank-you note sent by the famous pianist a few weeks before the Liberation of Paris. “Here you are, dear Friend—with my heartfelt thanks and best wishes for a speedy recovery.” This brief and warm letter attests to the personal relationships Alfred Cortot maintained with those around him. It bears his large, characteristic autograph signature. A leading figure in the French school of piano, Alfred Cortot (1877–1962) established himself as one of the most admired interpreters of Chopin, Schumann, and Beethoven. As co-founder, along with Auguste Mangeot, of the École normale de musique de Paris in 1919, he exerted a considerable influence on several generations of pianists. The date of this note, July 12, 1944, lends it additional historical significance: it was written during the final weeks of the German Occupation, a period during which the institutional responsibilities Cortot held under the Vichy regime later sparked considerable controversy. Condition: Generally good condition. A horizontal crease down the center; slight signs of handling. Handwriting and signature are well preserved.
