COLLIN (Charles-René) (1827–1911). French organist, composer - Lot 63
COLLIN (Charles-René) (1827–1911). French organist, composer, and musician. Autograph letter signed “Charles René,” addressed to Madame Flouest. Paris, August 8, 1895. 2 pages, in-8 format, in black ink on laid paper. An interesting letter in which the composer recommends several works on harmony and music education. After thanking his correspondent for a note that arrived late, Charles-René Collin provides her with references to three works intended for the study of harmony: “Here they are: these will be absolutely essential for you, namely: 1. Treatise on Harmony—Reber (Colombier); 2. Notes and Studies by Th. Dubois (Heugel); 3. 87 Lessons in Harmony by Th. Dubois (Heugel). ” He adds: “My thanks to Mr. Idzikowski for his kind support.” This correspondence attests to the composer’s pedagogical concerns and the importance placed on the theoretical training of musicians in the late 19th century. Charles-René Collin, organist and composer, was a prominent figure in Breton and French musical life. His work was rooted in the tradition of the French school of organ and religious music. The mention of Théodore Dubois (1837–1924), composer, organist, and future director of the Paris Conservatory, as well as that of Napoléon Henri Reber (1807–1880), professor of harmony at the Conservatory, lend this letter particular significance for the history of music education. The letter is signed with the composer’s common first name, “Charles René,” accompanied by an elegant initials. Condition: Good overall condition. Age-related creases, slight signs of handling, and minor signs of wear.
