COLLIN (Charles-René) (1827–1911). French musician, organist - Lot 61
COLLIN (Charles-René) (1827–1911). French musician, organist, and composer. Autograph letter signed “Charles René,” addressed to Madame Flouest. Paris, August 8, 1895. 4 pages, in-8 format, in black ink on laid paper. The fourth page bears the printed letterhead of the Hôtel d’Orient, 6 and 8 Rue Daunou, near Avenue de l’Opéra, in Paris. An interesting letter devoted to music and the Parisian music scene, in which the composer recommends books on harmony and arranges a meeting with several prominent figures. Charles-René Collin first thanks his correspondent for an invitation and expresses his regret at being unable to attend due to family obligations: “I am spending a lot of time with my family at the moment, and my mother, who cannot go out, is constantly alone.” He then provides her with the references for three books intended for the study of harmony: “Treatise on Harmony. Reber (Colombier); Notes and Studies by Th. Dubois (Heugel); 87 Lessons in Harmony by Th. Dubois (Heugel).” He also thanks Mr. Idzikowski for his kindness and suggests to Mrs. Flouest that he visit her, accompanied by Mr. Goss, so they can enjoy some music together. The composer concludes by noting that he will be available in fifteen days and sends her his warm regards. This correspondence is of interest for the history of French music education in the late 19th century, particularly due to its references to the works of Napoléon Henri Reber (1807–1880) and Théodore Dubois (1837–1924), two leading figures in music pedagogy at the Paris Conservatory. The letterhead of the Hôtel d’Orient, a hotel located near the Opera, adds documentary value to this letter. Charles-René Collin, a French organist and composer, was an active participant in the musical life of his time and distinguished himself particularly in the fields of religious music and organ performance. Condition: Showing signs of use. Old creases, small stains and foxing, slight fragility at the folds, traces of old adhesive, and ink smudges on the reverse. Text and signature are well preserved.
