CHRISTOFF (Boris) (1914–1993). Renowned Bulgarian bass, one - Lot 55
CHRISTOFF (Boris) (1914–1993). Renowned Bulgarian bass, one of the great lyric voices of the 20th century. Original black-and-white photograph depicting Boris Christoff in stage costume, in a dramatic role. Vintage silver gelatin print, 12.7 × 17.8 cm. On the reverse, a handwritten identification in pencil: “Boris Christoff in Boris Godunov,” along with the stamp of photographer Max Erlanger de Rosen, 6 Rue Alasseur, Paris (15th arrondissement). A beautiful portrait of the famous singer in one of his most iconic roles, Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky. With a somber and tormented expression, dressed in a lavish embroidered costume with a high collar, Boris Christoff embodies all the dramatic power of the Russian tsar. Considered one of the greatest basses of his era, Boris Christoff distinguished himself particularly in the Russian repertoire, notably in the operas of Mussorgsky, of which he was a leading interpreter. His deep voice, theatrical intensity, and exceptional stage presence contributed to his international fame. This photograph is of great iconographic interest for the history of opera and the performance of *Boris Godunov*. The print is in generally good condition, with slight signs of handling and a slight warp in the paper. There is no autograph signature by the artist.
