CASADESUS (Francis) (1870–1954). French composer, conductor, - Lot 40
CASADESUS (Francis) (1870–1954). French composer, conductor, and educator. Member of the famous Casadesus musical dynasty; brother of Henri and Marius Casadesus. Autographed postcard signed “Fr Casadesus,” addressed to Pierre Leroi, music critic for the *Courrier Musical*. Paris, March 11, 1923. 1 page, in-12 format, in black ink, on an illustrated postcard. 10-centime stamp and Paris postmark dated March 17, 1923. An interesting thank-you note from the composer to a music critic regarding his “Hymn for Trumpets and Orchestra.” Francis Casadesus warmly thanks his correspondent for the glowing remarks about his composition: “Thank you a thousand times for the charming remarks about my Hymn for Trumpets and Orchestra.” He adds that his son has fond memories of the recipient and sends him his regards. The front of the card features a printed portrait of Francis Casadesus, accompanied by a bilingual biographical note in French and English, listing his principal musical roles as well as a selection of his compositions, notably *Le Moissonneur*, *Cachaprès*, *Au Beau Jardin de France*, *Apothéose*, and his *Scandinavian Symphony*. A student of César Franck, Francis Casadesus pursued a career as a composer, conductor, and teacher. In particular, he conducted Parisian opera companies, participated in Franco-American musical life, and was associated with the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau. He also contributed to the dissemination of French music through his conducting and composing activities. This correspondence provides insight into the composer’s relationships with the Parisian music press in the early 1920s. It is of particular interest due to its illustrated format, which serves as a true promotional document featuring his portrait, his titles, and his major works. Autographed postcard, with a printed portrait on the front and handwritten text on the back. Stamp and postmark preserved. A few small tears and creases along the top edge, slight soiling, and signs of handling. Satisfactory condition.
