CARLÈS (Jean-Antonin) (1851–1919). French sculptor; winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1881. Creator of numerous sculptures and monuments, he was a student of Jouffroy and Hiolle, among others. Autograph letter signed “Antonin Carlès” to a colleague. Paris, February 19, 1913. 3/4 page, in-8 format. A charming letter of condolence addressed to a correspondent on the occasion of a family bereavement. “I learned this evening of the great misfortune that has befallen you and your children.” The sculptor expresses his sympathy and concludes with these words: “Please accept, with my respectful regards, the expression of our deepest sympathy. ” A personal example from the sculptor’s correspondence, illustrating the social ties maintained by artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
