BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). - Lot 34
BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to a friend [Louis Gallet, librettist]. No place, no date [circa 1891]. 4 pages, in-8. A very interesting letter discussing the rehearsals for his opera *Le Rêve*, the difficulties encountered with the performers, and the musical changes being considered. Bruneau mentions a consultation with Guiraud that caused him to lose several days of work and expresses concern about the upcoming rehearsals at the Opéra-Comique: “We’ve just had the consultation with Guiraud. It’s a [herpetic] fever, and I’ll have to stay in bed for a few more days. It’s taking so long! How will things go at the Opéra-Comique in the meantime?” He emphasizes the need to continue the work despite his absence: “Anyway, we must press on and, above all, not let fear get in the way. Keep me posted. Tell Carvalho how sorry I am. I hope everyone will work hard and that nothing will be delayed because of me.” In a particularly interesting passage, he discusses the changes to be made to the score—notably to Angélique’s role—as well as the difficulties encountered with certain performers. He also mentions the singer Soulacroix, the publisher Choudens, and the role of matinee performances. “The engraver is asking me for the second verses because they aren’t exactly in line with the music.” He considers several orchestral and vocal adaptations, including the addition of a new, lighter accompaniment and changes intended to facilitate the performance of certain passages. This letter provides valuable insight into Alfred Bruneau’s daily work, his relationships with singers, conductors, and the administration of the Opéra-Comique, as well as the practical difficulties of opera production in the late 19th century. A few foxing spots and crease marks. Handwriting is clearly legible. Autograph signature.
