BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). - Lot 33
BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to a correspondent. Paris, February 21, 1882. 2 pages, in-8. Printed letterhead: “En avant - Union des Jeunes Compositeurs.” An interesting letter concerning the early activities of the Union des Jeunes Compositeurs and the place of Wagnerian music in Parisian musical circles. Bruneau informs his correspondent of a decision adopted by the Union’s committee during its meeting the previous day: “The Committee believes that the Union should refrain from any collective action and leave it to each of its members to act personally, without authorizing them to commit the Society. ” He adds a remark that reveals the artistic debates of his time: “Such a decision appears to have been made the night before last, if I am correctly informed, by Wagner’s closest friends. ” An interesting document on the positions taken by young French composers regarding Wagnerism, a few months before Richard Wagner’s death, against a backdrop of lively aesthetic and musical debates. Letter on letterhead of the Union of Young Composers, bearing the handwritten address “10 rue Montholon, place Malhesherbes.” A few old traces of fastening and creases from handling, with no major damage to the text.
