BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of musical naturalism. He composed, among others, the operas *Le Rêve*, *L'Attaque du moulin*, *Messidor*, and *L'Ouragan*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to “Dear Friend.” Paris, 122 rue La Boétie, May 27, 1904. 1 page, in-8. A charming thank-you letter in response to a postcard, affectionately mentioning his family and an upcoming stay in the countryside. Bruneau warmly thanks his correspondent for sending a postcard that brought them great pleasure: “Thank you, dear friend, for your kind postcard, which brought us all great pleasure. We’re thinking of you: you must be freezing in the tent in this winter cold, which is so unpleasant after the lovely summer heat we had last week. ” He then mentions the joy this gesture brought his wife and expresses his hope to see his correspondent again soon: “Your dear wife brought us great joy by coming to dinner with us yesterday. Needless to say, we talked about you a great deal. ” He concludes by announcing an upcoming reunion: “See you soon, my dear [...], and in the meantime, we send you our warmest and most heartfelt regards. ” A delightful example of Alfred Bruneau’s friendly correspondence, revealing a composer who was attentive to his loved ones and personal relationships. The letter shows some marks and stains, but these do not significantly impair its legibility.
