BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. - Lot 22
BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of musical naturalism, having composed, among other works, *Le Rêve*, *L'Attaque du moulin*, and *Messidor*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to “Dear Master and Friend” [Émile Zola]. Paris, 31 Rue La Fontaine, December 30, 1887. 1 page, in-8. An affectionate letter of good wishes in which the young composer discusses his artistic hopes for the year 1888 and expresses his gratitude to his correspondent. “I wish to send you the truest expression of my best wishes and my most affectionate regards. The year 1888 will be a particularly happy one for me, as it will allow me to work with a master whom I love and admire. Let me tell you once again how grateful I am to you.” This letter attests to Bruneau’s admiration for his correspondent and his enthusiasm at the prospect of an upcoming artistic collaboration. It dates from the years when the composer was developing his naturalistic aesthetic, which would reach its full expression in his operas inspired by Zola’s work. Beautiful autograph signature. A few creases and slight signs of age; in good condition.
