BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. - Lot 21
BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of French musical naturalism. His notable compositions include *Le Rêve*, *L'Attaque du moulin*, *Messidor*, and *L'Ouragan*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to his friend Louis Gallet, librettist. [Paris], January 24, 1893. 1 page, in-8. Mourning paper, mounted on black cardboard backing. An interesting letter discussing the critical reception of his dramatic work and his correspondent’s impressions. Bruneau announces his attendance at a dinner gathering prominent figures from the worlds of music and literary criticism: “I will certainly attend the Critics’ dinner on Thursday and would be delighted to see you there. ” He then expresses concern about the reception of his musical drama and seeks his friend’s opinion: “Did I do a good job defending the music of our drama last Sunday? Are you satisfied with the impression it made? ” This letter, written a few months before the premiere of his opera *L’Attaque du moulin* at the Opéra-Comique, attests to Bruneau’s attention to criticism and his public defense of his works. An interesting piece of correspondence on the relationships between the composer, his librettist, and music critics in the late 19th century. Some slight signs of handling. In good overall condition.
