BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. - Lot 20
BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of French musical naturalism. His notable compositions include *Le Rêve*, *L'Attaque du moulin*, *Messidor*, and *L'Ouragan*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to the president [of a musical association or institution]. Paris, 60 rue de La Pompe, April 6, 1913. 1 page, in-8 format. A fine letter concerning his early days at the Opéra-Comique and an artistic event organized under the direction of his correspondent. Bruneau thanks his correspondent for the invitation he received to attend a performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées: “Premieres at the Opéra-Comique, the Gaîté, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées will prevent me from accepting your kind invitation.” He expresses his regrets and offers his best wishes for the event’s success: “I express my deepest regrets; I wish great success to the wonderful artistic event being prepared under your distinguished leadership, and please accept, Mr. President, my highest regards.” An interesting letter reflecting the intense musical activity in Paris on the eve of World War I, particularly centered around the Opéra-Comique and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, which opened in 1913. A few slight foxing spots, crease marks; in good overall condition.
