BERTON (Henri-Montan) (1767–1844). - Lot 12
BERTON (Henri-Montan) (1767–1844). French composer, member of the Institut, and professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory. Author of numerous comic operas, including *Montano et Stéphanie* and *Le Délire*. L.A.S. “H. Berton” to a certain gentleman. Paris, October 20, 1835. 1 page, in-8. An interesting letter concerning the composition of a hymn and its instrumentation. Berton thanks his correspondent for sending him the hymn, whose musical qualities he appreciates: “I have read your hymn; I found some good ideas in it, and above all, good instrumentation. The arrangement of the voices is quite well thought out, and your harmony is appropriate. ” He does, however, express some reservations regarding the difficulties the work presents in performance: “There are a few bold choices, but in terms of effect, I hope they can only be beneficial.” He encourages his correspondent to persevere and follow the advice that will help him improve: “I therefore urge you to persevere and continue along the path on which you have so brilliantly begun!” A fine letter of musical criticism and encouragement, attesting to Berton’s attention to composition, orchestration, and the training of musicians. Signature followed by his titles: “Member of the Institute, Officer of the Legion of Honor.” Some old creases, small foxing spots, and slight signs of wear.
