AURIC (Georges) (1899–1983). French composer, member of the - Lot 1
AURIC (Georges) (1899–1983). French composer, member of the Group of Six, close associate of Jean Cocteau, and a leading figure in 20th-century French music. Composer of numerous film scores, notably for Jean Cocteau and René Clair. A collection of annotated and corrected musical documents, accompanied by an autograph letter signed “Georges Auric” to Colette Herzog. No place, June 11, 1973. An interesting collection of musical work preserved in a red cardboard folder, comprising several sheets of printed scores with handwritten corrections and annotations in ink and pencil, as well as a sheet of handwritten musical notation and an autograph letter signed by the composer. The scores bear the printed name of Georges Auric. They feature numerous musical annotations, rhythmic modifications, indications of dynamics, tempo, and interpretation, as well as corrections and cross-references in red and blue ink. The sheet of handwritten musical notation, dated June 11, 1973, contains a series of measures, tempo markings, and various musical annotations. The collection is accompanied by a signed autograph letter addressed to Colette Herzog, in which Auric discusses the progress of his work and the mailing of a new version of a score. In this letter, written on stationery bearing his name, Auric announces with humor: “In the meantime, here is the ‘melody line’ of my masterpiece!!!” He hopes to receive a copy of the score and mentions the beginning of the following week. The letter ends with an affectionate closing and bears the signature “Georges Auric.” The score notably bears the handwritten notation “For Colette Herzog.” The exact connection between this dedication and the letter’s recipient remains to be clarified. This collection provides an interesting insight into Georges Auric’s methods of composition and revision, combining musical notation, handwritten corrections, and correspondence related to his work. A few creases, small marginal tears, and traces of adhesive. Red folder showing signs of wear.
