LEYMARIE (Jean). — Georges Braque. - Lot 161
LEYMARIE (Jean). — Georges Braque. New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Prestel, n.d. A quarto-sized volume, paperback, with a color cover illustration of a painting by Georges Braque. An important exhibition catalog devoted to Georges Braque (1882–1963), featuring an essay by Jean Leymarie, art historian and specialist in modern painting. The book traces the major stages of Braque’s artistic development, from his early pictorial explorations and his contribution to the development of Cubism to the compositions of his mature period. Abundant black-and-white and color illustrations reproducing paintings, still lifes, and Cubist compositions. The study highlights, in particular, Braque’s decisive role in the renewal of the pictorial language in the early 20th century, his dialogue with Picasso, and the evolution of his explorations of space, matter, and color. A beautiful publication by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, offering an illustrated overview of the work of one of the founders of Cubism. A good copy, with some slight scuffing on the cover.
