OCEANIAN ART. — An Introduction to Oceanian Tapa. - Lot 20
OCEANIAN ART. — An Introduction to Oceanian Tapa. Aix-en-Provence, Musée des Tapisseries, 1985. A large oblong quarto volume, paperback, with a color-illustrated cover. Catalog of the exhibition devoted to Oceanic tapa, held at the Musée des Tapisseries in Aix-en-Provence from July 4 to October 15, 1985. Tapa, a traditional fabric made from the pounded bark of certain trees, is one of the most characteristic expressions of Pacific textile arts. The book presents the various traditions of weaving and decorating these fabrics across the Pacific archipelagos, particularly in Polynesia and Melanesia. It offers insight into the diversity of geometric patterns, symbolic compositions, and ceremonial uses of these textiles. Illustrations in black and white and color, accompanied by maps showing the locations of the major Pacific archipelagos. A good copy, with a few slight signs of wear on the cover.
