Wit Stwosz. The Krakow Altarpiece - Lot 316
Wit Stwosz. The Krakow Altarpiece Paris, Éditions Cercle d'Art, n.d. [20th century]. Large folio, publisher’s binding with a color-illustrated dust jacket. Numerous color photographic reproductions, including several full-page ones. A major monograph devoted to Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoss, c. 1447–1533) and his famous Krakow Altarpiece, a masterpiece of late Gothic sculpture created for St. Mary’s Church in Krakow. The book features numerous reproductions of the monumental ensemble and its details: carved and polychrome figures, scenes from the lives of the Virgin Mary and Christ, the Resurrection, the Crucifixion, the Descent into Limbo, etc. The quality and large format of the reproductions make this an interesting resource on late 15th-century polychrome sculpture. The dust jacket is quite heavily worn, with scuffing, tears, small missing sections, and traces of adhesive; the book itself and its interior appear to be well-preserved.
