VAN PUYVELDE-LASSALLE (Ghislaine). Watteau and Rubens. - Lot 303
VAN PUYVELDE-LASSALLE (Ghislaine). Watteau and Rubens. Brussels–Paris, Éditions Universitaires, 1943. In-4, paperback, printed cover. A study by Ghislaine Van Puyvelde-Lassalle, a graduate in art history and archaeology, devoted to the relationship between Antoine Watteau and Peter Paul Rubens and, more specifically, to the Flemish master’s influence on Watteau’s work. The book draws on extensive iconographic material reproduced in black and white, directly comparing paintings, drawings, and engravings by the two artists. Notably, it features a particularly telling comparison between a detail from Rubens’ *La Kermesse* and a sketch by Watteau based on that composition, as well as Watteau’s *The Triumph of Venus*, engraved by Philippe Mercier. An interesting art history monograph devoted to the Rubens-Watteau connection, a key theme for understanding the Flemish sources of 18th-century French art. Cover and spine are slightly worn, with fairly numerous foxing spots; a few scattered foxing spots inside. A good copy overall.
