SADOUL (Georges). Jacques Callot, Mirror of His Time. - Lot 263
SADOUL (Georges). Jacques Callot, Mirror of His Time. Paris, Gallimard, NRF, [1969]. Large quarto, publisher’s ochre cloth binding, black decoration depicting a violinist after Callot on the front cover, title on the spine; black silk bookmark. An important monograph by Georges Sadoul devoted to Jacques Callot (1592–1635), tracing both the career of the Lorraine engraver and the political, social, and artistic context of his era. Richly illustrated with reproductions of Callot’s engravings, including numerous compositions reproduced in full-page or double-page spreads. The book examines, in particular, the artist’s major series and devotes a chapter to the famous *Miseries and Misfortunes of War* (1630–1635). This monograph is particularly interesting for the breadth of its iconography, allowing readers to appreciate Callot’s virtuosity in crowd scenes, festivals, landscapes, military subjects, and satirical compositions. A beautiful copy in the publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, with no visible dust jacket. A few slight signs of wear on the cloth; the interior is in very fresh condition.
