MALO (Henri). The Fouquets of Chantilly. Étienne Chevalier’s - Lot 198
MALO (Henri). The Fouquets of Chantilly. Étienne Chevalier’s Book of Hours. Paris, Éditions Verve, [n.d., circa mid-20th century]. Large quarto, loose-leaf in an illustrated hardcover, with the publisher’s slipcase or folder. Text by Henri Malo, curator of the Musée Condé in Chantilly. A beautiful publication devoted to the miniatures by Jean Fouquet from the famous Étienne Chevalier Book of Hours, now scattered, a major collection of which is preserved at the Musée Condé in Chantilly. The volume reproduces Fouquet’s compositions on color plates mounted on black backgrounds, particularly highlighting the painter’s remarkable palette and the monumental scale of his compositions. Among the scenes reproduced are notably *The Adoration of the Magi* and large religious compositions characteristic of Fouquet’s art. This publication is particularly noteworthy for its editorial quality—characteristic of Tériade’s work for Éditions Verve—and for the quality of its color reproductions. This copy has foxing and soiling on the cover, some wear, and minor surface imperfections; the interior and plates are in apparent good condition.
