HUILLET D'ISTRIA (Madeleine). French Painting of the Late Mi - Lot 146
HUILLET D'ISTRIA (Madeleine). French Painting of the Late Middle Ages (1480–1530). From Gothic Art to the Early Renaissance. The Master of Moulins. Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1961. Large quarto, illustrated cardboard binding by the publisher. A study by Madeleine Huillet d’Istria devoted to the mysterious Master of Moulins, a major figure in French painting around 1500. The book examines, in particular, the famous Triptych of the Virgin in Glory from Moulins Cathedral and draws parallels with the work of Jean Bourdichon. The author examines the various works then grouped under the conventional name “Master of Moulins,” their stylistic relationships, and their place in the transition from the Late Gothic to the early French Renaissance. Richly illustrated with documentary material, black-and-white reproductions, and several color plates, including *The Annunciation* from the Art Institute of Chicago. Note: this publication predates the now generally accepted identification of the Master of Moulins as Jean Hey; it therefore constitutes an interesting historiographical account of the state of research in the early 1960s. Minor signs of wear and slight scuffing on the cover; interior well preserved.
