GEFFROY (Gustave). The Museums of Europe. London. The Nation - Lot 116
GEFFROY (Gustave). The Museums of Europe. London. The National Gallery. Paris, Éditions Nilsson, 8 rue Halévy, [circa 1908–1910]. Large quarto, paperback with a gilt-edged cover illustrated in red and black by Georges Auriol. An important monograph by Gustave Geffroy devoted to the National Gallery in London, lavishly illustrated with 42 plates and 155 in-text illustrations. The book traces the formation and history of the National Gallery’s collections and presents the major schools represented in the museum. Numerous reproductions of works by old masters, notably Memling, Lawrence, and the leading representatives of the English, Flemish, Dutch, and Italian schools. Very attractive Art Nouveau cover by Georges Auriol, printed in red and black with a stylized floral design. Copy preserved under clear protective covering. Cover is slightly discolored and soiled, with minor warping and wear at the corners; a few scattered foxing spots, particularly on some of the plates. Overall, a good copy.
