VILLEMER — CLÉRICE (Charles) - Lot 301
VILLEMER — CLÉRICE (Charles) The Death of the Bell-Ringer. An Episode from the Army of the North, 1870–1871. Paris, Bassereau, publisher, 240 rue Saint-Martin, [late 19th century]. Patriotic song on a single sheet, lyrics by Villemer, illustrated with a spectacular color lithographed cover by Charles Clérice. The scene depicts the dramatic episode of the death of bell-ringer Jonas Vreix, “killed by the Prussians”: inside a bell tower, Prussian soldiers surround the bodies of the bell-ringers, one of whom is hanging from the bell ropes. The cover indicates that the story was narrated by Mr. Marais of the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin. A specialized collection of illustrated sheet music lists this edition as published by Bassereau, undated, with Villemer as the lyricist and Ch. Clérice as the illustrator. imagesmusicales.be On the reverse side, a substantial promotional catalog of Villemer’s “Récits patriotiques” published by Bassereau. A few creases and stains, small tears along the margins; the cover retains its beautiful colors.
