PATRIOTY. Republican Sketches. No. 2. The Spectres!!! — Why - Lot 255
PATRIOTY. Republican Sketches. No. 2. The Spectres!!! — Why have you made us suffer so much? Paris, Deforet and César, booksellers and publishers, 64 Rue Neuve-des-Petits-Champs; Talons Printing House, 19 Marché Saint-Honoré, [1871]. Large black lithograph, signed “Patrioty” in the stone. Plate No. 2 from the Republican Sketches series. A fierce political attack on Napoleon III, depicted seated and overwhelmed amid the spectres of the 1870 War and the Siege of Paris. Surrounding the deposed emperor are Famine, Epidemic, Bombardment, and Combat—the shroud of which bears the names Avron, Le Bourget, Montretout, and Châtillon. The document of Paris’s surrender lies on the table. The composition takes the form of a veritable indictment: the victims and calamities of war come to hold the sovereign responsible for the conflict to account. The title, *The Spectres!!!* — Why Have You Made Us Suffer So Much?—emphasizes the somber and accusatory tone of this remarkable caricature from the immediate postwar period. Scattered foxing, a few marks and creases from handling.
