THE ILLUSTRATED PAMPHLETS — “THE UNVEILED SECRETS OF THE BLA - Lot 227
THE ILLUSTRATED PAMPHLETS — “THE UNVEILED SECRETS OF THE BLACK CABINET” THE ILLUSTRATED PAMPHLETS. The Secrets of the Cabinet Noir Revealed. [Paris, 1870], Les Pamphlets illustrés, No. 2. A large, illustrated, and colored satirical sheet published in the aftermath of the fall of the Second Empire. A caricature depicting the “Cabinet Noir,” a system for intercepting and monitoring correspondence, whose practices were strongly condemned after the discovery of documents at the Tuileries. The scene notably depicts François-Thomas Vandal, former Director General of the Post Office, poring over private correspondence, while a woman holds a miniature figure on her lap. Two verse captions beneath the illustration: “Sweet secrets of love, friendly outpourings / On scented paper, tender confessions conveyed” and “Behold what a fate!… What a sickening scandal! / You were often condemned by the agents of a Vandal…”. Lithographic and typographic print, enhanced with color. Old handwritten note in the upper margin. A few creases, foxing spots, and small marginal tears; paper slightly browned.
