THE FUTURE GOVERNOR OF PARIS VERNIER (Charles). THE FUTURE GOVERNOR OF PARIS. “There will be violins!...” Paris, A. Mordret, publisher, 8 rue Poulet, [1871], No. 15. Colored lithograph signed in the stone Ch. Vernier. A popular violinist stands on a platform, instrument and bow in hand, while a caricatured head appears beneath his foot. The caption “There will be violins!...” ” plays on the double meaning of the word “violin,” which colloquially refers to a place of detention. Caricature published in the context of the political upheavals in Paris in 1871. Condition: generally good; paper slightly yellowed, a few stains, and minor wear along the edges.
