THE CONTRAST — TWO PRISONERS FROM SEDAN - Lot 196
THE CONTRAST — TWO PRISONERS FROM SEDAN VERNIER (Charles). THE CONTRAST. Two Prisoners from Sedan. Paris, Lith. Formstecher frères, [1870–1871]. Colored lithograph. On the left, Napoleon III, taken prisoner after the Battle of Sedan, is comfortably seated in a large armchair, wearing a dressing gown and reading *Le Figaro*, with a bottle and a servant nearby. On the right, a rank-and-file French soldier, wounded and with his arm in a sling, sits on a rock under the watchful eye of a Prussian soldier. A powerful satire based on the contrast between the treatment reserved for the deposed emperor and that of the captured French soldiers. Condition: yellowed paper; small foxing spots, soiling, and minor damage to the margins.
