SUCCESS - Lot 189
SUCCESS [ANONYMOUS]. — Success. Paris, 1871. A large lithographed political caricature, shown here in a black-and-white print, depicting an allegorical card game between France, a French soldier, and a figure representing the Prussian adversary. The composition bears the inscription “Paris, 1871” engraved in the stone. Above the scene, a sword bears the ironic motto “Long live the freedom of turnips”; on the right, a decorative element recalls the battles of 1870. The captioned dialogue beneath the image contrasts French hope with “the hatred of the peoples” and the appeal to Providence. This composition is characteristic of the satirical imagery that emerged from the Franco-Prussian War and its immediate aftermath. Lithograph on tinted paper. Black-and-white proof prior to coloring. A few creases, small tears, and minor damage to the margins, particularly along the top edge; paper slightly browned. Overall, the piece remains very striking.
