A HISTORY OF THE BONAPARTES’ ROMANCES, SCANDALS, AND LIBERTI - Lot 138
A HISTORY OF THE BONAPARTES’ ROMANCES, SCANDALS, AND LIBERTINISM. Marguerite Bellanger (based on a photograph by Disdéri) and her beloved lord. Paris, [circa 1870–1871]. Large-format illustrated satirical print dedicated to Marguerite Bellanger, the famous mistress of Napoleon III. The composition depicts the Emperor kneeling beside Bellanger, who is reclining on a bed, in a deliberately risqué scene. At the top, a large title reads: “History of the Bonapartes’ Love Affairs, Scandals, and Debauchery.” Below the illustration, the caption reads “Marguerite Bellanger (after a photograph by Disdéri) and her sweet lord,” followed by a satirical text referencing, among other things, Sedan and William I. Black lithograph with hand-colored details, printed on a sheet featuring typographic text on the reverse, visible through the paper. Paper is slightly browned, with creases and small marginal tears, a few foxing spots, and signs of wear.
