HADOL — VICTOR HUGO IN EXILE HADOL (Paul). [Victor Hugo in Exile]. Paris, Lith. Lemercier ?, [circa 1870]. Proofs of the colored satirical lithograph, depicting Victor Hugo isolated among the rocks, surrounded by skeletal figures. Below the image are two lines from *Les Châtiments*: “In some vile prison, hearing nothing but his chains, Alone, always alone, speaking in vain to the deaf rocks, Seeing silence and hatred all around him, No men anywhere, and only spectres!” Signed “Hadol” on the plate. Old annotation in the upper margin; paper browned; creases and small marks.
