HADOL — “GUILLAUME AND BISMARK PUTTING ON THEIR JACKETS” - Lot 121
HADOL — “GUILLAUME AND BISMARK PUTTING ON THEIR JACKETS” HADOL (Paul). Guillaume and Bismarck putting on their jackets. Paris, on sale at Duclaux, 21 Place du Château-d’Eau; available at Madre, 20 Rue du Croissant, [1870–1871]. Partially colored satirical lithograph depicting William I and Bismarck heading back to Berlin, their jackets under their arms. A milestone ironically reads “95,000 kilometers from Paris,” and a sign reads “Road to Berlin.” The title plays on the double meaning of the popular expression “remporter une veste,” which means to suffer a defeat. Signed “Hadol” on the plate. Paper is slightly browned, with a few foxing spots and minor marginal marks.
