H.B. [Henri BOUTET?] - Lot 117
H.B. [Henri BOUTET?] Mr. Jules Favre. *Les Larmes de Ferrières*. Paris, Lith. Lemaine & Fils, 61 rue de Cléry; on sale at Duclaux, 21 passage du Château-d'Eau; available at Madré, 20 rue du Croissant, February 1871. Partially colored satirical lithograph depicting Jules Favre in caricature form, his disproportionately large face shedding tears into a basin bearing the inscription “Tears of Ferrières.” On the right, the figure holds a “Ferrières handkerchief” and a “Versailles towel.” The print is signed H.B. in the stone and dated “February 71.” An identical copy is held at the Heidelberg University Library and dated 1871; the Paris Bar Association Museum also holds this caricature and specifically describes it as a satire of Jules Favre’s negotiations with Bismarck at Ferrières. Paris Bar Association Museum A fine example of political caricature from the Franco-Prussian War. Slight foxing and minor marginal marks.
