POPULAR SONG - Lot 85
POPULAR SONG New song. To a brand-new tune. — On the vanity and pride of humankind. New tune. Amiens, 1767. Rare single sheet, printed on both sides, decorated with small typographic flourishes. On the front, “New Song. Set to a Brand-New Tune,” a burlesque song about a village wedding, with the refrain: “reguingo, reguinguette / reguinguette, ô reguingo.” On the back, a second song: “On the Vanity & Pride of Mankind. New Tune,” a moral satire on social foibles, fashion, disguised poverty, and worldly pretensions. At the bottom: “Permitted for sale in Amiens on June 28, 1767. JOURDAIN DE THIEULOY.” A fine example of an 18th-century ballad, preserved on its original sheet. Browned paper, with numerous signs of wear, creases, foxing, tears, and small marginal losses, but with no major damage to the text.`
