POLITICAL CARTOON — PLEBISCITE OF MAY 8, 1870 - Lot 82
POLITICAL CARTOON — PLEBISCITE OF MAY 8, 1870 “VOTING BOX — May 8, 1870. The Liberal — The Democ-Soc.” [Paris], 1870. Large satirical lithograph depicting the plebiscite of May 8, 1870, caricaturally pitting a “Liberal,” holding the “YES” ballot, against a “Democ-Soc. ” holding the “NO” ballot, with the two figures facing off above the ballot box. Signed in the stone “Frido (?)” and bearing the lithographic address in the left margin. The caption successively mocks the Democratic-Socialist, the Liberal, and the abstainer. A document characteristic of the intense satirical output accompanying the Second Empire’s final plebiscite. Condition: sheet formerly folded; significant horizontal tear running across the composition; old restorations or repairs; marginal damage and losses; soiling.
