POLITICAL CARTOON — THE WEDDING AT CANA - Lot 81
POLITICAL CARTOON — THE WEDDING AT CANA VERNIER (Charles). A REVISITED GRAND BANQUET OF THE WEDDING AT CANA, TO CELEBRATE THE BAPTISM OF THE REPUBLIC. Paris, A. Mordret, publisher, [circa 1871], no. 3. A large, hand-colored lithograph depicting a large cast of caricatured contemporary figures gathered around a banquet. The biblical theme of the Wedding at Cana is reimagined to depict, in a burlesque style, the “baptism of the Republic” and the difficult reconciliation between the various French political factions. A large-scale composition characteristic of the abundant satirical output that emerged following the fall of the Second Empire and the early days of the Third Republic. Condition: yellowed paper; old creases, tears, and small marginal losses, particularly in the lower portion; a few stains.
