Extensive black-and-white photographic illustrations, consisting of approximately 180 full-page reproductions of photographs by Roman Vishniac. ISBN: 2-02-006987-3. First French edition. French edition of one of Roman Vishniac’s major photographic records of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. Taken primarily in the 1930s, these photographs document daily life in the Jewish communities and villages of Central and Eastern Europe. The French edition was published in 1984, following the release of *A Vanished World* in the United States, with a foreword by Elie Wiesel. The French publication was accompanied in 1984 by the exhibition “A Vanished World: Photographs by Roman Vishniac” at the Centre Georges-Pompidou, held from October 24 to November 19 to mark the book’s release by Éditions du Seuil. This copy is still in its original plastic wrap and appears to have never been opened. There are a few marks, creases, and minor imperfections visible on the protective film; the condition of the binding and interior cannot be verified without removing the plastic wrap. This fact that it has been preserved in its original packaging is a particularly interesting feature of this edition.
