SALGADO (Sebastião). — In Principio. Brazil. [Trieste], illycaffè, 2003. Small quarto, paperback; softcover illustrated with a black-and-white photograph by Sebastião Salgado, featuring the illy logo in red; full-page black-and-white photographs. First edition of this small photo book published by illy to mark the first phase of the In Principio project. Bibliographic references indicate 26 pages, size approx. 16 × 15 cm. A rather interesting Salgado The volume is dedicated to Brazil, the first stage of the extensive photo essay undertaken by Sebastião Salgado on coffee culture. The photographs were taken in 2002, notably in the coffee-producing regions of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, and the project was presented to the public in 2003. It is therefore not merely an illy advertising brochure. It is the first installment of a full-fledged photographic series by Salgado, born out of his collaboration with illycaffè. The photographer would later continue the project in India, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Colombia. The collection documents the work of the farmers, the landscapes, and the various stages of coffee production. This first Brazilian campaign also led, in 2003, to an exhibition at the Auditorium in Rome, as well as a coffee cup from the Illy Art Collection featuring a photograph from the series. Its bibliophilic appeal lies precisely in the relatively limited circulation of this corporate publication: it constitutes a standalone publication by Salgado predating the major retrospective exhibitions of the project.
