The second volume of this brief history of photography conceived by Hans-Michael Koetzle, covering the period 1928–1991. The book is not merely an anthology: each chapter begins with an iconic photograph and traces its origins, historical context, reception, and place in the history of the medium. Notable subjects include Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, Martin Parr, and several of the leading figures in 20th-century documentary and artistic photography. The photographs in this copy include a spectacular two-page spread devoted to a scene from political photojournalism, as well as the chapter on Richard Peter Sr., featuring reproductions from his famous book on Dresden in ruins after World War II.
