KERTÉSZ (André) — ATGET (Eugène) — EVANS (Walker). — Télérama Album. Paris, Télérama, 2010. A box set containing three photographic albums dedicated to three major figures in the history of photography: André Kertész (1894–1985), Eugène Atget (1857–1927), and Walker Evans (1903–1975). Three paperback volumes, richly illustrated with black-and-white photographic reproductions, presented in the publisher’s illustrated slipcase. Forewords by Jean Rouaud for Kertész, Sylvie Aubenas for Atget, and Raymond Depardon for Walker Evans, respectively. Box set ISBN: 978-2-914927-28-4. The publication date is listed as December 8, 2010. Each volume constitutes a short monograph alternating between a critical introduction and a representative selection of the photographer’s work. The volume on Kertész traces his career from Hungary (1912–1925) to France (1925–1936), then to New York and his later work, notably his Polaroids. The volume on Atget is organized around France, Old Paris, gardens, and “modern times.” The volume on Walker Evans covers, in particular, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The comparison of these three photographers is particularly apt: Atget, a great chronicler of old Paris, exerted a profound influence on documentary photography; Kertész developed an extremely personal visual language across Budapest, Paris, and New York; Walker Evans became one of the leading American figures in the documentary style, notably through his photographs of the Southern United States during the Great Depression. Télérama presented these publications as three “tribute albums,” each 68 pages long, dedicated to Kertész, Atget, and Evans. Condition A fine, complete set of the three volumes and the slipcase. The albums appear to be in good overall condition, with some slight signs of wear on the glossy covers. The slipcase is slightly scuffed, with small marks, superficial scratches, and slight wear on the corners and edges, but remains sturdy and presentable.
