GABORIAU (Émile) — THE FAMOUS COTILLONS GABORIAU (Émile). The Famous Cotillions. Paris: E. Dentu, publisher, n.d. [19th century]. Third edition. In-12, contemporary brown half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gold fillets, gilt title, marbled paper covers. Engraved portrait as frontispiece. A historical and anecdotal work devoted to the favorites, mistresses, and influential women of French history, ranging from legendary mistresses to the great figures of the royal courts: Agnès Sorel, Duchess of Étampes, Diane de Poitiers, etc. *Les Cotillons célèbres* is one of Émile Gaboriau’s earliest works and was originally published by Dentu in 1861 in two volumes; its success was significant enough to lead to several successive editions throughout the 1860s. The copy presented here clearly bears the notation “Third Edition” on the title page. The binding appears to be either later or contemporary with the edition and combines the text into a single volume. Condition: shows signs of use; binding is scuffed, spine is worn with leather peeling, corners and edges are worn; paper is slightly browned with scattered foxing spots. Overall, the book is in solid condition.
