A beautiful volume devoted to representations of desire, love, and eroticism in cinema. Jean-Luc Douin, a film critic and historian, examines how cinema has constructed a veritable mythology of desire, from silent film to contemporary cinema. The book explores the major figures and myths of cinematic eroticism: Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, as well as the worlds of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Alain Resnais, Werner Herzog, Charles Vidor, and others. Themes such as the gaze, the body, fantasy, seduction, and the staging of romance are explored through a wealth of film stills, accompanied by literary and cinematic references. Richly illustrated, with numerous full-page and double-page reproductions. Of particular note are the sections devoted to *Nosferatu*, Alain Resnais, and Rita Hayworth’s famous striptease in *Gilda*.
