John Craven (1912–1981), whose real name was Louis Conte, was a photographer, filmmaker, and gallery owner. His book *200 Million Americans*, published by Hachette in 1968, won the Prix Nadar that same year. This 2002 catalog focuses specifically on that American series. The photographs featured in your copy—Chicago architecture, the election campaign in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, leisure activities, and entertainment—provide a very good sense of this photo essay on 1960s America: a documentary perspective, yet often with highly graphic composition and a touch of irony. Interest in Craven, moreover, appears to be undergoing a reappraisal: the Berthet-Aittouarès Gallery, which still represents him, dedicated a new exhibition to his industrial work in 2020–2021 and has included him again in its 2026 photography program.
