PARIS BI-MILLENNIUM — BELGIAN ART — 1951 Paris Bi-Millennium. Belgian Art. Paris, 1951. A large commemorative volume published on the occasion of the Paris Bi-Millennium celebrations held in 1951. Paperback, with a cream-colored cover featuring a full-color depiction of the coat of arms of the City of Paris, along with the motto “Fluctuat nec mergitur” and the capital’s decorations. A contributor’s and press copy, as indicated on the half-title page—an interesting distinction from the standard edition. A major illustrated publication devoted to the cultural and artistic relations between Paris, France, and Belgium, bringing together numerous texts and illustrative materials. Notable among these is an essay by Count Jean de Hauteclocque, then French ambassador to the King of the Belgians, as well as contributions on Parisian history, arts, and literature, including “Paris de Balzac” by André Billy. Numerous photographic reproductions, portraits, old views, and works of art. The context is clearly that of the major Parisian celebrations of 1951: the Bi-Millennium events gave rise that year to numerous exhibitions, publications, and official commemorations. In good overall condition, with a clean interior; the cover is slightly yellowed and soiled, with a few marks, creases, and minor wear along the edges and spine.
