The BnF confirms the 1874 Paris edition published by Didier et Cie; it is the first edition of this work devoted to the major figures of the popular and revolutionary movements in medieval and modern Italy. In it, Jules Zeller examines, in turn, Jean de Procida, Arnaud de Brescia, Nicolas Rienzi, Michel Lando, and Masaniello, through whom he traces several major episodes in Italy’s political and social struggles. The work is part of Zeller’s historical studies on Italy and the Middle Ages. A fine copy of the first edition, elegantly bound in period binding. Provenance: A. Grandjean, name written in ink at the top of the title page. A few foxing spots, mainly on the first few leaves and more subtle in the body of the book; slight scuffing on the binding. Nevertheless, a very attractive volume, in a well-preserved decorative binding.
