SALEM (Yves-Marie). Struggles for Young People. Foreword by Jean-Marie Jouaret. [Paris], Les Presses Universelles, 1971. In-8, paperback, cream-colored cover printed in red and black. First edition of this essay devoted to youth and their education, drawing on the author’s hands-on experience working with young people from various social backgrounds, both in France and abroad. Yves-Marie Salem-Carrière (1925–1994), born in Sommières, studied literature and the humanities before being ordained a priest in 1950 in the Congregation of the Mission of Saint Vincent de Paul. He taught for some thirty years in France and abroad, notably in Lebanon, and also served as a military chaplain. The book is prefaced by Jean-Marie Jouaret, an international basketball player and member of the High Committee on Youth, Sports, and Recreation. In it, the author brings together the insights gained from his encounters with and experience working among young people, addressing their aspirations, their struggles, and issues of education and social engagement within the social and spiritual context of the late 1960s. This first edition was completed at the Aubanel printing house in Avignon on November 22, 1971. The book, which had become difficult to find, was reprinted in 2013 by Lacour-Ollé. This copy is accompanied by a loose leaf printed in the name of Yves Salem, then a high school chaplain in Sommières, extending his “best regards” to the recipient and asking for support for efforts to promote the education of young people. A beautiful, very fresh copy, preserved in its original binding. A few tiny signs of wear on the cover.
