ROMAINS (Jules). — The Year 1000. Original lithographs by J. Ernotte. Paris, Éditions de l'Odéon, 1947. Folio, loose-leaf, with a printed endpaper, publisher’s cardboard slipcase with a pink cloth spine bearing the title in white, matching slipcase. First edition, published the same year as the theatrical premiere of *L'An Mil*, staged in Paris in March 1947 in a production directed by Charles Dullin. A beautiful bibliophile edition illustrated with original lithographs by Jacques Ernotte, printed on Jacques Pauzat’s hand-cranked presses. The illustrations include numerous compositions within the text and 14 lithographs as separate plates. The total print run is limited to 250 numbered copies, constituting the first edition. This copy, No. 110, is one of 194 copies printed on Johannot pure-fiber paper, numbered from 57 to 250. The colophon distinguishes several particularly enriched proof copies: a single copy on Imperial Japan paper; one copy on Japan paper with plates and drawings; 5 on Arches paper with plates and an original drawing; 20 on Arches paper with plates and a drawing; 20 on Johannot pure-thread paper with plates; 10 on Johannot pure-thread paper with one plate; and finally, the 194 copies on Johannot pure-thread paper, to which this one belongs. The copy is preserved in its publisher’s slipcase, a desirable condition for this publication. A few small marks and foxing on the spine of the cover, slight normal wear on the slipcase; the interior is in very fresh condition, with wide margins preserved and lithographs in fine condition.
