ROMAN MISSAL. Dijon, Pellion & Marchet Brothers, publishers, [late 19th century]. Very small 8vo, full black shagreen, ribbed spine, covers adorned with extensive gilded brass metalwork; the front cover features a large openwork design with neo-Gothic and botanical motifs, accented with cabochons, extending along the edge with a wide, engraved brass hinged clasp; gilt edges. Endpapers of paper decorated with neo-Gothic motifs. Original slipcase lined in black, interior of ivory-colored silk or satin, fitted with metal clasps. A very attractive devotional missal from the late 19th century, richly illustrated and ornamented in the Neo-Gothic style: engraved title page, large religious compositions, frames, initials, fleurons, and typographical ornaments accompanying the Latin text with a French translation opposite. The main appeal of this copy lies in its spectacular ceremonial binding, characteristic of missals given as gifts on the occasion of a First Communion or wedding. The large brass plate on the front cover, which is particularly elaborate and finely cut, together with the edge clasp, constitutes a true example of goldsmith’s work applied to the book. A beautiful copy preserved in its original slipcase, a condition that has become quite rare. Some scuffing and minor signs of wear on the binding; the gilt edges show slight patina. The slipcase shows wear, soiling, and damage to the interior lining, but remains structurally sound. The interior is well-preserved.
