MALRAUX (André). The Imaginary Museum of World Sculpture. III: The Christian World. Paris, Gallimard, “La Galerie de la Pléiade,” 1954. First edition, constituting the third volume of *The Imaginary Museum of World Sculpture* and the seventh volume of the “La Galerie de la Pléiade” collection. Copies of this edition are particularly recognizable by their spectacular hardcover binding designed by Paul Bonet. A substantial in-8 volume (approximately 23 × 18 cm), polychrome publisher’s hardcover based on Paul Bonet’s original design, with an abstract pattern covering the front and back covers, composed of black calligraphic motifs and green, orange, black, and gold geometric shapes on a cream background; spine bearing the title; original orange cardboard slipcase. Extensive photographic illustrations devoted to Christian sculpture, featuring black-and-white reproductions and color plates. The volume comprises approximately 474 pages. The archaeological documentation was compiled primarily by Raymond Lantier, Jean Charbonneaux, and Marcel Aubert. The book was printed in a run of 7,250 copies, including 7,000 numbered from 1 to 7,000 and 250 non-commercial copies. All are listed as “bound according to Paul Bonet’s design” and constitute the first edition. Copy no. 2583. Printed in November 1954 by Imprimerie Georges Lang in Paris. A very fine copy, especially given that this type of cardboard binding often has damage at the spine. The polychrome decoration appears remarkably fresh and vibrant here; the interior is clean and the illustrations are well-preserved. Original slipcase included, with wear, scuffing, and minor damage to the corners and edges. A transparent plastic sleeve appears to cover the volume in the photographs.
