First and only edition, published anonymously under the notation “by the author of *Trois dizains de Contes Gaulois*,” but attributed to Léon Jaybert. It constitutes the second volume of the “Écrin du Bibliophile” collection. A lovely edition of these light-hearted tales in verse, lavishly illustrated by Henriot (Henri Maigrot). The illustrations include, notably, an etched frontispiece and numerous illustrations within the text; a bibliographic description lists 93 of them, with a separate illustrated page for each “après-souper.” Strictly limited to 500 copies, with the note “This work will not be reprinted”: 50 copies on Japanese paper, numbered 1 through 50, and 450 copies on laid paper, numbered 51 through 500. One of the 450 copies on laid paper, this one being no. 179. The copy is preserved in its attractive original binding with a color-illustrated cover. Untrimmed. A few foxing spots and scattered small stains; the cover is slightly faded, with minor marks and wear on the headband and edges; the interior remains in good condition.
